Maadi, a quiet suburb of Cairo, (18 km from the town center), is a traditional real estate favourite with the foreign community. Its greenery, old homes, quiet streets and international schools (e.g.Cairo American College, French Lycee and the Maadi British International School) have attracted expats, particularly families who are looking for a quiet refuge from the hassle and bustle of Egyptian life. There is a strong community feel in Maadi involving activities (check out Community Services Association on road 21). Entertainment is limited to a few low-key restaurants, some choice coffee shops and two cinema complexes with bowling alley and ice-skating rink. Gyms, banks, travel agents and other survival elements are available.
Maadi is divided into Sarayat or Old Maadi, Degla and New Maadi, higher to lower budget bracket respectively. The difference is in the amount of calm, greenery and agelessness of the buildings. Most cairo villas and fancier apartments / flats for rent and for sale are located primarily in Old Maadi followed by Degla.
Maadi's attractiveness is furthered by its easy access to Qattamia club (15 minutes by car), and Carrefour Hypermarket and Mall (10-15 minutes by car). More schools, other than those mentioned above, are also in the Quattamia and New Cairo area about 15-25 minutes away.
Office rental in Maadi is a particular favourite among some industries, e.g. oil and gas, because of its easy links to main traffic arteries for Sinai, Suez, and the Red Sea. PricewaterhouseCoopers - Egypt (assurance, tax and advisory services) is also strategically placed in Maadi. Companies who choose Maadi for for workspace, can lease either individual work-space or apartment buildings.
Some companies choose to be situated on the Maadi Nile Cornish. This area provides direct access to down-town Cairo and Giza area. Office space abounds in tall skyscrapers with parking and facilities.
